Behind the Garage Doors of the World’s Richest

March 13, 2008

Everyone loves to own at least one car. In today’s world, it has become a necessity. But when you’re rich and money is no object at all, what cars will you own? How many cars will you own? Owner of casino resorts such as Wynne Las Vegas, billionaire Stephen Wynne, had just bought his wife, Elaine, a blue Ferrari F430 Spyder of the 2007 model. The story behind the purchase can be summed up to this: Because the color of the Spydr matches her eyes. Mrs. Wynne has other cars aside from her new Ferrari. She also drives a Bentley Arnage and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Other billionaires prefer less flashy cars. Warren Buffett, a genius investor, drives around a low-profile Cadillac DTS sedan in spite of the fact that he is worth more than $50 billion. With a similar case, the Wal-Mart successor, Alice Walton chose to own a typical Ford F-150 pickup.

Donald Trump, a billionaire because of his real estate empire, spends hundreds of thousands (or more) for his rides of choice. His car collection includes several Rolls-Royce Phantoms and a Ferrari F430.

Owning cars, whether you’re a billionaire or not, really does speak of one’s personality. It has become a popular tool of expression. Aside from owning cars that suit both needs and wants, accessorizing them is something most people seem to enjoy doing.

Taking a Look at Some Celebrities’ Unique Cars

March 11, 2008

Some celebrities – Hollywood celebs, sports stars, music artists — like to keep a low profile while others tend to bask in the spotlight directed to them. They all approach and treat their stardom in varying ways, whether it’s about their preferences when staying in a hotel or their take on menu when going for a tour. It’s a real variety out there and it’s time to take a look at some of the vehicles of celebrities. Vehicles which are meant to grab attention and make people stop and stare.

The first on the list is Britney Spears’ 2005 Hummer H2. It’s huge, it’s pink and it’s owned by none other than the Pop Princess herself, Britney Spears. This Hummer H2 is powered by a 6-liter V8 engine and has a 4-speed automatic transmission. Based from the military-based H1, this Hummer was built as a more compact, more civilian-friendly and less costly than SUVs. It can accommodate up to five passengers with an optional third row.

Rapper baby Bash owns a 2005 Dodge Magnum. This sleek car of his is done in two-tone, sure to catch anyone’s attention. This one’s a wagon with three trim levels offered: SE, SXT and RT. The SE houses a 2.7-liter V6 engine with 190 hp while the SXT is powered by a V6 with 250 hp. With the RT trim comes a 5.7-lier V8 engine with 340 hp. This Dodge seems to be designed to look cool and to give a powerful performance.

Basketball star Tracy McGrady preferred the 2002 Ferrari Spyder 360 Modena F1 as one of his choices of cars. It comes with leather seats, a blast of an effective air conditioning system, power windows, locks and mirrors, and AM/FM radio with CD player. This being a supercar seems to be a fitting choice for such a distinguished player.

“Entourage” Cast Talks Cars

March 6, 2008

The successful HBO television show series “Entourage” features a group of men out for a good time, women and male bonding sessions. But what actually goes on behind the set when the lights are turned down and the scenes are done and over with? Well, there are interviews, for one thing. And during one of their interviews, the guys from the show talked about what any other man wants to talk about: cars.

Kevin Dillon, who portrays Johnny Drama, revealed that his first car was an Audi Fox. When it got wrecked, he replaced it with a ’67 Firebird, which was a convertible. There’s a story behind that: On Friday the 13th, someone jumped out in front of him and was sent smashing through the side of the convertible. Needless to say, Friday the 13th still scares this guy until now. He said, “But they were both great cars, and I now have a ’69 Firebird, which is the best car I’ve ever had because I’ve had it for the longest period of time and it runs like a champ. It just kicks over every time. It’s amazing. I’ve had so many other cars come and go, and that Firebird is the best.” Admittedly, Dillon’s dream car is a ’67 Corvette which he hopes to own someday.

A ’65 Mustang was the first car ever owned by Jeremy Piven (a.k.a. Ari Gold). Too bad that his friend had it taken away from the city due to too many parking tickets. He was in London studying in college at that time and had gone home to find his beloved Mustang gone and sold. When asked what his dream car is, Piven responded that he’s into vintage cars like vintage Jaguars. “They’re kind of amazing,” He said.

1988 Acura Legend, gray leather interior. This was the first car that Rhys Coiro (Billy Walsh) owned. He made it pretty clear how much he loved that car, saying that one can’t go wrong with a Honda. At the moment, he doesn’t own a car. He does have a Kawasaki KLR 650, though.

Rex Lee, or Lloyd in the show, had a secondhand Buick Skylark for his first car. Next car he’d be driving? A Toyota Prius, which seems to be a favorite among the celebrities. Not one to fancy sports car, Lee says he wants some nice luxury car, like a Lexus.

The man behind the hit show, Mark Wahlberg, was also asked about his first owned car and his dream car. He said that the first car he ever bought was a Volkswagen Bug but the “first legal car” he had was a ’75 Cutlass Supreme. The story behind that car? “I sold it. I smashed it and sold it.” When asked about his dream car, he replied that he would want an electric Cadillac Escalade. This is the kind of car he hopes Cadillac will soon work on.

Edward Norton Becomes A Member of the BMW Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program

March 4, 2008

Golden Globe awardee and Oscar nominee Edward Norton is the latest in line in the BMW Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program. Joining Will Ferrell and Jay Leno, Norton received the keys to the first ever luxury sedan which is powered by hydrogen. This luxury sedan is not for sale. However, because of its use of hydrogen as its sustainable fuel when it comes to transportation it is already deemed as an achievement. It reduces carbon dioxide emissions which harms our environment since it gives off only water vapor. It is BMW’s belief that the Hydrogen 7 will pave way in using hydrogen as an effective alternative to gasoline for a better and safer environment. Norton had commented, ““The excitement of this car to me is that it demonstrates what we’re capable of, and it inspires me to keep advocating for a more sustainable way of life.”

Norton seems to be fit for being in the Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program because he himself was responsible for coming up with the Solar Neighbors Program. This program’s objective was to bring photovoltaic (PV) panels to the low-income houses in Los Angeles. He was able to draw in celebrities to the program, such as Brad Pitt. It was a successful project. “Within its first year the program succeeded in getting resources for dozens of solar installations for inner-city families.”

BMW had gotten the likes of Edward Norton and other popular and influential people in their Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program to encourage the people in giving their massive support to vehicles which are powered by hydrogen instead of fuel. Other notable members of the program are Placid Domingo (opera star singer) and Steve Gaghan (a recognized director). To add to the illustrious list of the power of the Hydrogen 7’s concept, power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had chosen to ride the BMW Hydrogen 7 during the premiere of “Ocean’s 13.” For the Cinema for Peace Gala which took place in Berlin, Richard Gere and Sharon Stone had the Hydrogen 7 for their ride.

“Having a passion for cars and motor sport, I am really looking forward to the opportunity to be part of all the GP action.” That is what Mark Philippoussis, the Australian tennis player champion, said about being included in the 2008 FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix. The race is going to be held in Melbourne, Australia.

Philippoussis was one of the recent additions to the list of participants for the said event. The 193 centimeters tall Aussie tennis player will be in the race along with other athletes across various sports such as ALF, athletics, basketball, cricket, netball, rugby, soccer, and surfing.

The tall stature of Philippoussis was a bit of a concern for a moment, as there were qualms about him being able to fit into the vehicle that he would be using, the Celebrity Challenge Fiat 500. All worries were dispelled when he climbed into the Fiat and fitted in just right. The Fiat 500 is one of the hottest cars in Europe, with the proof of being awarded in different occasions several times. David Stone, General Manager of Fiat Cars in Australia, had something to say about the Fiat 500: “With its outstanding advance sales, its unique parentage and cheeky good looks, the new Fiat 500 is already a celebrity in its own right.”

Scott Storch: “You Can’t Compromise”

February 19, 2008

“You can’t rush into the first deal that somebody offers you. As much as you feel like you need to or whatever emergency it is financially, you can’t compromise. It might work for you at the time, but you might regret it later. People have a hard time thinking of themselves as successful and [end up] limiting what their future can do if they sign to somebody exclusively or make the wrong decisions in a contract. My advice is, look before you leap.” These words came from Scott Storch, the famous record producer. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Storch was an early member of The Roots. He was the man responsible for Dr. Dre’s comeback record, jumpstarting his popularity. After that project, Storch worked with Xzibit (the “X” lead single on the Resltess album back at 2001), Snoop Dogg (3 tracks on The Last Meal album), Beyonce (“Dangerously In Love”), 50 Cent (“Get Rich or Die Tryin’” and The Massacre), and Christina Aguilera (Stripped). Among his list of clients are Paris Hilton, Mario, R. Kelly, Mya, and Chamillionaire.

Now that his bank account’s reportedly around $70 million, it should come as no surprise that Storch’s car collection is as extravagant as his wardrobe and accessories. His car collection includes four Rolls-Royce Phantoms, one Rolls-Royce drop head coupe, a Bentley Azure, Bentley Continental GT, 1973 Jaguar XKE, Aston Martin Vanquish S, Maybach 62, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Ferrari Superamerica, Lamborghini Murcielago roadster, and finally a Bugatti Veyron 16.4. His taste in cars definitely holds no compromises, as it seems he wants nothing but the best.

He also owns a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. This car model is the successor of the 456M and is named after the well-known coachbuilder of Ferrari, Sergio Scaglietti. Its engine is the 5748 cc, 12-cylinder, 48-valve, 65°V and has 434 lb-ft of torque at 5,250 rpm. It can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds, reaching 196 mph as its top speed. Large and spacious, this Ferrari has no problem zipping past.

Beckham: All Blacked Out

February 18, 2008

David Beckham was recently spotted driving a Porsche Turbo Cabriolet when he picked up his wife, Victoria (“Posh Spice”), at the LAX Airport. This Cabriolet was customized for Beckham, getting an overhaul to suit his taste and style. The headrests of the vehicle had custom embroideries and the exterior was made all black. Beckham fans would be keen to know that his customized Porsche Turbo Cabriolet now matches the rest of his five black vehicles.

Distinctively styled with class, the Porsche Turbo Cabriolet has an engine which is all about power. It has turbochargers which features Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) and its 3.6-L engine has 353 kW at 6,000 rpm. It has a maximum torque of 620Nm, where it can rise to 680 Nm with the “overboost” function that comes with the Sport Chrono Package Turbo option. Safety is not left behind with this model. It has 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and the rear has four-piston fixed calipers. With monobloc aluminum construction, these brakes provide more stability and added efficiency in braking. This is just scratching the surface of safety. This particular model also comes with anti-theft protection and six separate airbags.

The standard seats have full electric adjustments, its seat base lowered to give more headroom. The rear seats have a lot of storage area. One simply folds the backrests down for that extra 155 liters’ worth of luggage space. The additional features of the Porsche Turbo Cabriolet are the “Welcome Home” lighting, ParkAssist, Cruise control, HomeLink, and Dimming mirrors.

The Porsche Turbo Cabriolet is the vehicle with high torque at low engine speeds. This means that there is no turbo lag. It also has excellent handling and increase in performance. The power output may be high but that its fuel consumption? You’d be surprised to know that it’s low.
