Behind the Garage Doors of the World’s Richest

March 13, 2008

Everyone loves to own at least one car. In today’s world, it has become a necessity. But when you’re rich and money is no object at all, what cars will you own? How many cars will you own? Owner of casino resorts such as Wynne Las Vegas, billionaire Stephen Wynne, had just bought his wife, Elaine, a blue Ferrari F430 Spyder of the 2007 model. The story behind the purchase can be summed up to this: Because the color of the Spydr matches her eyes. Mrs. Wynne has other cars aside from her new Ferrari. She also drives a Bentley Arnage and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Other billionaires prefer less flashy cars. Warren Buffett, a genius investor, drives around a low-profile Cadillac DTS sedan in spite of the fact that he is worth more than $50 billion. With a similar case, the Wal-Mart successor, Alice Walton chose to own a typical Ford F-150 pickup.

Donald Trump, a billionaire because of his real estate empire, spends hundreds of thousands (or more) for his rides of choice. His car collection includes several Rolls-Royce Phantoms and a Ferrari F430.

Owning cars, whether you’re a billionaire or not, really does speak of one’s personality. It has become a popular tool of expression. Aside from owning cars that suit both needs and wants, accessorizing them is something most people seem to enjoy doing.

Paris Hilton Fuels Up

February 26, 2008

For what seems to be a mundane task for everyone else out there, the mere action of Paris Hilton gassing up her vehicle had somehow earned its way to the headlines of tabloids and blogs alike.

Apparently, hotel heiresses don’t just go around partying or promoting their latest products (like shoes). The ever popular Ms. Paris Hilton was spotted at Mobil gas station. She wasn’t there for some product promotion or publicity stunt but rather for fuelling up her Land Rover. The Land Rover the hotel heiress was filling up has fuel requirements of premium unleaded (91 pump octane) with a fuel tank of 18.5 U.S. gallons or 70 liters.

Dan Wheldon: “I’m a First-Class Flipper”

February 9, 2008

His career track is not something to be looked down. Well into his fifth season of racing competition, the 29 year-old English already impressed a lot of people with his skilled driving. He already has eleven wins in his IndyCar career, not to mention holding victory at the Indianapolis 500. Dan Wheldon belongs to Target IndyCar team, which has garnered five championship titles and forty-six wins. Admitting that he’s more of the laid-back, introverted type and that he’s not that scary when driving on the usual roads, Dan Wheldon also says that in the matter of cars he’s a “flipper.” To quote from him, “I admit it: I’m a first-class flipper… Not so long ago I had seven cars in the driveway . . . a new BMW M6, a BMW 330i, and a tricked-out Range Rover. I forget the rest. I woke up one morning and just decided to flip them. So this guy comes round, offers me a quarter of a million for the lot, and by five o’clock they’re on his truck and away.”

His collection of cars is just as impressive. His collection is definitely not something to be scoffed at. Not counting his race car, a Honda-powered, single-eat with 240-.p.h. (385 km-h), one of the cars Dan Wheldon owns is an Aston DB9. This particular model had cost him $200,000. He also loves his monster truck, the black Hummer H2, which he tweaked a little. The said Hummer now has 20-inch chrome rims. Another car included in his collection is an all-wheel drive Acura RL. He had it customized with 20-inch wheels. His plans of customizing his stealthy-black Acura do not end there. He wants to have it lowered with a television system installed at the back. “I want something different than the usual seven-inch screens in the back of the headrests. I’m looking at having a 20-inch LCD screen mounted on some kind of adjustable bracket on the center console. I’m still refining the idea.”

In a more sentimental note, Dan Wheldon has kept the red 2005 Corvette Indy Pace Car. He claims he would never sell it, as it would always be a reminder to him of that particularly significant victory back in 2005. “Winning the 500 is the best. It really puts a stamp on your career, really puts you on the map. It was definitely a defining moment for me. It’s certainly a wonderful feeling to be in the company of the racing greats who’ve won it in the past: A. J. Foyt and Rick Mears, and Britain’s Graham Hill and Jim Clark.”

Other cars he owns are a Jaguar XKR Coupe and an Acura MDX sport. Dan Wheldon says that he gets a kick out of constantly having something new to play with. Given his striking car collection, it is clear that he really does enjoy cars – whether racing on the tracks or driving on roads.

Timeless vehicle of Ralph Lauren

October 26, 2007

Another great vehicle of Ralph Lauren is the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Mille Miglia. With an engine of dry sump twin Scintilla magneto supercharged inline 8 cylinder 2.9 liters, this car was made to perform. Its other features include hydraulic 17 inch brakes, fully independent suspension and a four speed rear transaxle.

Back in 138, this Alfa Romeo was the world’s fastest production road car. A limited number of this vehicle was produced and until now, it remains to be sought after. It was in August 1999, that the roadster was last auctioned by Christies at Pebble Beach. It was bought at a price of four million and seventy two thousand US dollars.

Today on the trail of Ralph Lauren’s impressive car collection is the 1930 Mercedes-Benz “Count Trossi” SSK. Rare and classic, this Mercedes has distinctive aerodynamic pontoon fenders, long and low bonnet and tapered tail.

The cabin is not equipped with doors, but inside one would see the luxury in the custom dash board complemented by a huge Mercedes-Benz steering wheel.

Its 18 inch wheels sit huge copper brake drums that were originally designed to aid brake cooling. Under the hood, the engine occupies most of the bay. It can provide a full 300bhp due to the ‘elephant’ supercharger that came straight from the special SSKL.

When Ralph Lauren got this car he had Paul Russel and company restore it. They then dedicated 5000 work hours and two years, before introducing it at the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours where it won Best In Show. It also conquered the 2007 Villa d’Este Concours where it also won Best in Show.

The Ralph Lauren collection does not end here, more to come next week.

Lauren’s other collection

October 11, 2007

Ralph Lauren has become synonymous to power and style. But not many people know Ralph Lauren is not just a fashion mogul, he also has an exceptional car collection. There is no comparison to his cars which he describes as having, “Timeless Beauty.”

It is in the Speed, Style and Beauty: The Ralph Lauren Car Collection in Discovery Channel where Ralph Lauren opened his garage and let the public take a peek at some of his jaw-dropping cars.

“I’ve always admired timelessness, and some of the cars that I have started to collect have that message of timeless beauty,” Lauren says in the show.

Timeless, indeed, his cars are impressively beautiful and great performing. Among his collection is the 1929 Blower Bentley. This classic Bentley is made to win races. Its classic design and performance made it land as one of James Bond’s car in Ian Fleming’s early novels.

Blower Bentley

It is said that the car was designed by W.O. Bentley, but it was Sir Henry Birkin, who insisted on Bentley to include a supercharger, or the “blower” element.

Prius for Ms. Alba

October 2, 2007

Toyota Prius is probably the most popular hybrid car today with its gaining patrons and impressive sales with monthly sales of 12,227 units. The said figure moved the Prius to the ninth place for the top ten bestselling cars in the U.S. for the month of February.

Jessica Alba and her Prius

The Prius is also very popular among celebrities including Jessica Alba. But the hybrid car’s popularity is matched by its great performance, which not everyone expected from an environment-friendly vehicle. It is able to produce 110 horsepower and can easily reach 60 miles in 10.2 seconds. In fact, Alba said in her recent interview with Jay Leno that she also gets speeding ticket. This just shows that the Prius has enough power. Boasting on being a green vehicle, the Prius can emit 89 percent less smog-forming emissions, compared to an average new car.

Jessica Alba will also be driving her real life car, the Prius, in her new movie, “Good Luck Chuck.”

How Tom Cruise rolls

September 29, 2007

How celebrities roll is not limited to the cars they drive, some celebrities have other means of getting around. It was reported that Cruise is a fan of motorcycles and has more than a dozen of them as his collection, including a Ducati. His collection also comprises a custom made Vyrus 985 C3 4V, which he bought for $100,000. The Vyrus was made in Italy and was made according to Cruise’s weight and height. It is said to have a top speed of 170mph.

Green cars may not be for everyone

August 31, 2007

The automotive industry has been getting a lot of support from celebrities for their green cars. But not everyone is pleased about it.

Yoko Ono, the widow of late Beatle John Lennon, was not at all impressed by these innovative vehicles. In fact, she feels that environmentally-friendly cars are not as comfortable as her Bentley.

She thinks that along with concerns to reduce pollution levels through hybrid vehicles, the manufacturers should also take care of people’s comfort.

An online source quoted her saying, “Can someone make Hybrid cars as comfortable as a Bentley, please?”
